Beth is one of our most seasoned therapeutic support workers who has an intense hyperfocus on dungeons and dragons.  Beth has received training in Therapeutic Gaming and she would like to facilitate a group of younger neurodivergent children who have previous exposure or knowledge of Dungeon and Dragon and would be interested in a “water-downed” D&D experience with like-minded peers.

What is “water downed”:

  • Stats and modifier accounting: dice modifiers will be streamlined to a few numbers for each level.
  • Magic material inventory: no material will be required for casting
  • Game economy and EXP would also be hyperinflated for speed levelling.
  • The session will involve both life-action role play (LARP) and tabletop gaming to accommodate the neurodivergent nervous system’s needs for movement and use of the body to process thoughts and communicate.

Beth will also meet each child individually before the first day of the group to bond and create characters.

Cost: $40 per hour x 3 hours x 8 sessions + $40 intake= $1000

Maximum: 4.5 participants

The full amount of the camp must be pre-paid.  We can also invoice the autism funding unit or other third-party funding sources.

The session will begin with unstructured playtime.  Because D&D is a relatively complex game, children need an hour to move their bodies, co-regulate with the facilitators and peers, discuss the previous gameplay, negotiate requests, and go through existing materials to feel grounded and regulated.   If there are no restrictions around food, the group can coordinate ordering pizza.  At 6 pm, then group will officially “sit down” to begin the campaign.   The children are welcome to move their bodies and engage in sensory play around the facility when it is not their turn.

The Clinic is located in a residential space with sensory friendly lighting, washroom, airc conditioned and sound/light reduced rooms, and access to quiet backyard space.

The camp would be the only programing in this facility at this time.


In terms of explicit and implicit demands, the camp is relatively unstructured. All activities are voluntarily and democratically decided.  The participants have the freedom to roam and use the full facility, inside and outside. There is also a sensory room for resting and relaxation.

Characters of the game can “go on side quests” or “take a nap” if the player does not wish to partake is certain aspect of the game.  In addition to Beth, a support worker can engage the child in different activities instead.


Participation Requirements

We envision four children who

  • are above the age of 10.
  • have shown a strong desire for social interaction with peers.
  • have a strong curiosity and desire to imagine and create.
  • have previous knowledge or experience with D&D. (for example, knows the differences between rogue and fighter).
  • have some capacity for uncertainty in the game play.
  • have consented to participate in this camp. (We never want to force children into therapy).

To ensure a safe and supportive environment, we have specific requirements for participation:

  • Families must be able to identify and communicate their child’s potential triggers and cues of distress with the therapist in advance.
  • Children should have the capacity to be gently redirected and to exit situations that may cause discomfort or stress.
  • It is crucial that there are no immediate safety concerns such as bolting, self-harm, or hair-trigger activation of fight/flight responses towards peers.
