Counselling is an art and a science.

For the science part: I am vacillating between “it’s starting to make sense” and the “it’s complicated” stage of my counselling career, in lock step with neurodiversity-affirming scientific advances where new researches often contradict each other and overturn “old” facts.

For the art: I have found that how I show up as a counsellor can vary different from one client to the next. Practicum students who have observed me have commented that I reminded them of a Method trained actor. I am masking? No, I am code-switching from one linguistic code to another depending on the social context and each mode represents a very real part of my lived experience.  This is common amongst cultural minority folks.

Nevertheless, there are somethings about me that stayed consistent.  My analogies are often far fetched and often cringeworthy. I am prong to frequent self-disclosure and impulsive information dump. Strong passionate energy and out of the box. Simultaneously fiercely ideological and ruthlessly practical.  Simultaneously too cognitive and too intuitive.
